Optimizing Your Hyperlinks For Search Engines

Optimizing your hyperlinks for search engines is another thing you can do to improve the weighting of your blog posts.  In one of my previous posts on Optimizing Your Blog Posts For Search Engines, I talked about the importance of writing your blog posts with both your readers and the search engines in mind.

Taking this practice a step further, have a look at your internal blog hyperlinks, and see if you can do anything to improve the relevancy of them.  What I mean is, have a look at the anchor text you are using for the hyperlink, and if possible improve the relevancy of the anchor text used.

For example, you will see in the first paragragh above, I use a hyperlink to point to one of my previous blog posts.  The actual anchor text used for the hyperlink is the title of that particular blog post.  When the search engine spiders crawl this post, they will also crawl the hyperlink above, and when they do they will record the anchor text used within the hyperlink.  The anchor text I’ve used for the hyperlink accurately describes the blog post it refers to, and so there is a chance that the search engines will give the blog post it refers to a little more weighting.

If you are not sure how to change the anchor text, have a look at the example below.  If you are using Blogger or Wordpress as your blogging platform, there is an option to view the HTML of your blog post while you are creating it.  Here’s how I change the anchor text for my hyperlinks:

  • Whilst I am in the ‘visual’ window when creating a new blog post, I open a new window, navigate to the blog post I wish to use, and copy the address from the address bar;
  • I paste the address into the blog post I am creating;
  • Click on ‘HTML’ view, and you should see the following where you pasted the address:

<a href=”THE WEB ADDRESS YOU HAVE PASTED INTO YOUR NEW BLOG POST”>THE WEB ADDRESS YOU HAVE PASTED INTO YOUR NEW BLOG POST</a>

  • Change this HTML code by inserting the relevant anchor text as shown below:

<a href=”THE WEB ADDRESS YOU HAVE PASTED INTO YOUR NEW BLOG POST”>CHANGE THIS SECTION TO THE ACTUAL TEXT YOU WISH TO USE FOR THE ANCHOR TEXT</a>

  • Once you’ve changed the text highlighted in red above, return to the ‘visual’ view within your blog post editor.
  • You should now see your anchor text displayed as a hyperlink.

It’s worth going back over your previous blog posts, and checking to see if you can improve the relevancy of the anchor text you have used for your hyperlinks.  Optimizing your hyperlinks for search engines is a worthwhile exercise, and sticking to this practice will give your blog a greater chance of ranking higher within the search engines.
