Buying A Domain Name - Which Extension?
Following on from my last post on buying a domain name for your blog, I mentioned that I bought the .com extension for $10 for a year. I am also considering buying the .co.uk extension, as I live in the United Kingdom.
There are so many different extension types for your domain name, including .com, .co.uk, .net, .org, .biz, .info .eu, .me.uk etc etc.
So which domain names should you buy? Well, if, like me, you’re just starting out, it’s a good idea to buy the most recognised domain extension, the .com option. If, after a few months, I feel that I’ve created a good reader base, and my ‘brand name’ “watchmebuildtraffic” becomes increasingly popular, then I will most likely buy the majority of the available domain name extensions, so that eventually I will own the following domain names:
http://www.watchmebuildtraffic.com/ (I already own this)
http://www.watchmebuildtraffic.co.uk/
http://www.watchmebuildtraffic.net/
http://www.watchmebuildtraffic.biz/
http://www.watchmebuildtraffic.info/
http://www.watchmebuildtraffic.eu/
http://www.watchmebuildtraffic.me.uk/
I will make all of these domain names point towards my blog, so that anyone typing in the domain names above would be directed to my blog’s front page.
I think that by buying the various domain names extensions for your web address, it gives you a level of control over your domain name. For example, I wouldn’t want someone else to buy http://www.watchmebuildtraffic.info/ and create a website or blog using that domain name. I want the address “watchmebuildtraffic” to be associated with my blog and my blog only!!
So if you enjoy writing for your blog and watching it develop, it’s a good idea to buy the domain name and point it towards your blog.
