Buying A Domain Name For Your Blog
If, like me, you’re using Blogger to do your blogging, then you’ll know that it’s a great free way to give yourself a real presence on the internet. It’s a simple case of choosing the name for your blog, then your blog address will be “http://www.yourblogaddress.blogspot.com/”.
If you’re serious about your blog and can see it growing and developing over the long-term, then it’s a good idea to buy the domain name associated with your blog. For example, my blog’s website address is watchmebuildtraffic.blogspot.com, and so if I wanted to buy the domain name, I would be looking to buy “watchmebuildtraffic.com”. It’s a very simple process to buy your domain name, even more so if you’re buying it through Blogger itself. The other alternative is to buy a domain name through a third party, a simple Google search will bring up loads of companies who sell domain names. Of course, buying a domain name is subject to availability, it’s strictly first come, first served!
I actually bought my domain name “watchmebuildtraffic.com” through Blogger, by logging into my blog account, going to ‘Settings’ – ‘Publishing’ and following the simple instructions from there. Once you’ve bought your domain, you can switch to ‘publishing on a custom domain’, which basically means that if someone types in your new domain name in the address bar, they will be directed to your blogspot blog.
“Watchmebuildtraffic.com” cost me $10 for a year, which in my opinion is a very reasonable price to pay.
Another advantage to using Blogger for buying your domain name is that as soon as you’ve bought your domain name and changed your settings (see above), the changes will come into effect immediately. Once I’d changed the settings, I typed “http://www.watchmebuildtraffic.com/” into the address bar, hit enter, and I was taken to my blog!
This is great for promoting your blog too. In all of your online promotions, you can use your new domain name to point people in the direction of your blog. People will also be much more likely to remember your blog’s name if it’s shorter (i.e. without the ‘blogspot’ part of the address). It will also show your readers that you are committed to your blog and its contents if you’re willing to splash out a little cash on your domain name.
On a side note, there’s no need to worry about your old blogspot web address not working after you’ve set up your new domain name. If you were to type in the address bar either:
http://www.watchmebuildtraffic.com/, or;
http://watchmebuildtraffic.blogspot.com/,
you would be taken to my blog with either domain name!
All in all, a few great reasons to go ahead and buy your domain name for your blog!
